Said Aidi is a Tunisian politician who served as Minister of Vocational Training and Employment from January to December 2011 in the transition government led by  Beji Caid Essebsi.

This former école polytechnique student began his career at the centre of research and development of Compagnie Générale d’Informatique before joining the large multinational IBM in 1993.

In 2004, he created a business IT consultancy, Atlasys, and in 2006 he was appointed managing director of the company HR Solutions Accsess, which publishes software for the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa).

Rasha Albadareen joined the Jordan Department of Labour, Employment and Training in November 2008, and currently oversees the affairs of the Office of Unemployment Section, working on an initiative to create job opportunities for the Jordanian population.

She served as administrator in the Department of Labour for the National Employment Strategy, where she monitored its executive programme for the years 2011-2020, which aims to generate awareness among young people of their importance to enable them to build their futures and find suitable jobs.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in management information systems from the Hashemite University in Jordan.

Peter Bossman is a Ghanaian-born Slovenian doctor and politician. He is currently serving as mayor of Piran, a city and municipality in Slovenian Istria, in south-western Slovenia.

A member of the centre-left social democrats, he defeated the incumbent mayor, Tomaž Gantar, in the October 2010 mayoral election to become Slovenia's first black mayor. In 2011 he was also appointed to the Committee of the Regions of the European Union.

He officially took office at the first (constitutional) meeting of the municipal council on 12 November 2010. His inauguration as mayor attracted more members of the media, including international media, than there were council members present.

 

Ouided BOUCHAMAOUI

After her management studies and a master’s degree in international trade, Ouided. Bouchamaoui began her career at HBG (Hedi Bouchamaoui Holding). She began at the bottom and learnt to manage both purchases and staff. Then, in 1994, she created Maille Fi, a company with 200 employees specialising in combed cotton.

She was appointed Vice President of UTICA (Tunisian Union of Industry, Commerce and Crafts) in 2006. In 2011 she was named President of the organisation.

She is also the founder of the Maghreb Economic Forum and the group Connecting Tunisia (Leadership in Women), President of Business-Med (since September 2011), Vice President of the Tunisian Foundation of Inspection and Governance (since 2009), Manager of the company ANSAM, member of the board of directors of HBS OIL COMPANY (Hédi Bouchamaoui and Sons Oil), partner of the company ASTORIA Immobilière, and member of the Tunisian-French Chamber of Commerce (CTFCI).

She received the prize of the best achievements of Arab women, awarded by the G8 Deauville Partnership, in June 2013.

Alistair BURT

Parliamentary undersecretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, UK Government

 

 
In May 2010, Alistair Burt was appointed Parliamentary Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs under the new government. The minister’s current geographical portfolio includes the Middle East, North Africa, Sri Lanka and the Maldives and North America. He is also the minister responsible for counterterrorism, counterproliferation, counter piracy and the Arab Partnership. He is a qualified solicitor and executive recruitment consultant.

Having first entered parliament almost 30 years ago, he was Member of Parliament for Bury North from 1983 until 1997. He has held the position of Member of Parliament for North East Bedfordshire since 2002.  Previous Government positions include Minister for the Opposition Assistant Chief Whip and Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party (2008-10); Shadow Minister for Communities and Local Government (2005-08); Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Leader of the Opposition (2002-05) Minister for Disabled People (1995-97) and Minister for Social Security (1992-95). The minister is a patron for Habitat for Humanity UK, and supports World Vision with Sport. A keen runner, he has completed nine marathons.

Andrea CAMMELLI

Professor of social statistics at the University of Bologna until 2012, he conducted several research activities, notably on the long-term analysis of training processes on higher education.

He joined the UNESCO Headquarters Commission for statistical surveys.

In 1994 he founded the AlmaLaurea Inter-university Consortium, whose model was successively extended to secondary education through AlmaDiploma and AlmaOrièntati.

With the European Union’s contribution, AlmaLaurea is currently engaged in developing its model in Morocco, Tunisia, Armenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro.

At the invitation of the World Bank, AlmaLaurea has recently been presented in Washington.

 Jean-Pierre Chauffour is Lead Country Economist for Morocco and Regional Trade Coordinator in the Middle East and North Africa Region at the World Bank.

Prior to joining the World Bank in 2007, he worked for 15 years at the International Monetary Fund, where he held various positions, including mission chief in the African Department and Head of Office and Representative to the World Trade Organization and United Nations in Geneva. 

He also worked for two years as a senior economist in the Directorate for Economic and Financial Affairs at the European Commission in Brussels. 

He holds a master’s degree in economics and a master of advanced studies in monetary affairs, banking, and finance from the Panthéon-Sorbonne University in Paris.

Pascal has held several expert and managerial positions in TNS in the last 11 years. He is also the Global Account Director of the European institutions and the World Bank for TNS (within the TNS Political & Social Practice). He currently manages on behalf of the European Institutions the three most important Political & Social contracts in the world, namely the Standard, Flash and Qualitative Eurobarometers. He speaks fluently English, French and Arabic.

 

Claudio CORTESE

Claudio Cortese was appointed Senior Deputy Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean on 1 April 2013. He graduated in science and holds a postgraduate diploma in economics.

He started his career in the banking sector as a representative of the Banco di Roma in Brussels. In 1981 he joined the European Investment Bank (EIB) and worked mainly in the Directorate of Operations outside the European Union as a senior cadre. He participated in the launching of the FEMIP

(Facility for Euro-Mediterranean Investment and Partnership) and contributed to the definition of its strategy and implementation in the Mediterranean region.

He is an Ufficiale dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana and Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la République de Côte d’Ivoire.

Rafael PÉREZ COLÓN

Rafael Pérez is responsible for Microsoft’s collaboration with official international development agencies, and public sector business development focusing on emerging economies. 

During his 35+ years in the information technology field, he has worked in various areas as a computing centres/network specialist/MIS director/CIO and consultant for university systems and government agencies; university professor; computer science researcher; technology journalist (TV, radio and press); ICT industry entrepreneur; and international corporate executive with the Microsoft Corporation since 1998.

He holds a PhD (ABD) in computer science, a master’s degree in knowledge engineering from Madrid Polytechnic University, and a BSc in computer engineering from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez.

 

Elena DEL REY SANTAMARÍA

Elena del Rey Santamaría is currently Head of Fundraising and Institutional Cooperation at Barcelona Activa, the Economic Promotion Agency of Barcelona, in charge of the implementation of the economic development policies of Barcelona City Council.

She has extensive professional experience in the execution of economic policies at a local, regional and international level. The main policies developed include entrepreneurship and business support, employment creation, foreign talent and investment attraction, as well as the promotion of public-private partnerships in strategic sectors and areas.

Prior to that, she worked at the Ministry of Economy of the government of Valencia (Spain) for the management of different EU territorial cooperation programmes. She also gained widespread experience in multilateral organisations, working for the European Commission and in the private sector, working for consultancy firms.

She is a lawyer and has a master’s degree in European studies from the Université Catholique de Laouvain (Belgium). She is also a postgraduate in strategy and regional competitiveness of the Universitat Politècnica de Caltalunya (School of Professional and Executive Development).

 

 

Mohamed LAMINE DHAOUI

Mohamed Lamine Dhaoui has been heading UNIDO’s BIT Branch since March 2010 after the merger of the Industrial Policy and Private Sector Development Branch (PTC/PSD) with the Investment and Technology Promotion Branch (PTC/ITP).

Serving UNIDO since 1990, he has held various positions including the PTC/PSD Director, Special Adviser to UNIDO Director-General/Coordinator of Thematic Issues, and Deputy Director for the Trade Capacity Building (PTC/TCB) Branch.

He represented UNIDO in several international events and intervened as resources person, speaker and/or chair of session.

He holds a PhD in management science. He was also professor at the High Institute of Management of the University of Tunis.

He obtained a degree in legal studies from the University of Legal, Political and Social Sciences in Tunis in June 1997 and a Bachelor of Law obtained in June 1999.

In June 2001, he graduated with a master’s degree in European law and Euro-Maghreb relations from the same university.

He has been a member of the research laboratory in European law and Euro-Maghreb relations since 2005 and a founding member of the trade union committee of the Law University of Sfax.

Mehdi JOMÂÂ

Minister of Industry, Tunisia

 

 

 

 
Mehdi Jomaâ was previously director of Hutchinson Aerospace Division at Aerospace, a subsidiary of the Total group (France) and a partner of major manufacturers.

An engineer who graduated from ENIT (1988), with a postgraduate diploma in mechanical engineering, computing and modelling of structures, he has spent his entire career within this group to be promoted to the position of General Manager in the Aerospace and Defence Division and appointed member of the Executive Committee in 2009.

The company’s scope covers six subsidiaries, mainly in France, in the U.S., India and Tunisia.

He is currently Minister of Industry.

 

 

Nader S. KABBANI

Director of Research and Policy, Silatech

 

 

 

 
Prior to joining Silatech, Nader S. Kabbani served as founding Director of the Syrian Development Research Centre at the Syria Trust for Development, a faculty member with the Department of Economics at the American University of Beirut, an economist with the Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and a fellow of the California State Senate Office of Research. 

 

During his career, he has worked as a consultant for a number of international organisations, including the World Bank.

 

He obtained a BA in economics from Claremont McKenna College and a PhD in economics at the Johns Hopkins University in 2001.

 

Mats KARLSSON

Director, Marseille Centre for Mediterranean Integration

 

 

 
 

Mats Karlsson has been engaged in international development and integration since 1983. After holding positions in the Swedish administration, politics and government, he joined the World Bank in 1999, where he has been focusing on global governance, African development, and currently Maghreb development and Mediterranean cooperation.

He is currently Director of the Centre for Mediterranean Integration in Marseille. He has published four books on the transformation and integration of Central and Eastern Europe. As State Secretary 1994-99, he focused on Sweden's response to European integration. He has frequently participated at Forum 2000; an international dialogue presided over by former President Vaclav Havel.

 

Marylise LEBRANCHU

Marylise Lebranchu was born on 25 April 1947 in Loudéac (Brittany). She has been Minister of Reform of the State, Decentralisation and Civil Service since May 2012. She was the Keeper of the Seals at the Ministry of Justice from 2000 to 2002.

She was Minister of State to the Ministry for Economy, Finance and Industry, with responsibility for small and medium-sized enterprises, trade,craft industries, and consumer affairs from March 2000 to October 2000. From 1997 to 2000 she was Minister of State to the Ministry for Economy, Finance and Industry, with responsibility for small and medium-sized enterprises, trade and craft Industries.

She holds a degree in land management from Rennes University.

Bernardino LEÓN

European Union Special Representative for the Southern Mediterranean Region

 

 

 
BernardinoLeón was born on 20 October 1964 in Málaga. He holds a master’s degree in law from the University of Málaga, and a master’s degree in international relations, from the Centre of International Studies, in Barcelona.

 

He started his diplomatic career in Spain in 1990, and held posts at the Spanish embassies in Liberia and Algeria and at the Permanent Representation to the European Union in Belgium. Later he became advisor to the Special Envoy of the European Union for the Middle East.

 

In 2004, he was appointed as State Secretary (Vice-minister) of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, mainly dealing with South America. Since 2008, he has been Secretary General at the Spanish prime minister's office, acting as main foreign policy advisor to Prime Minister José Luis Zapatero. In 2009, he also became a sherpa for the G20.

Shehab MARZBAN

Co-founder, Shekra Crowd Fund for Start-ups

 

 
 

Shebab Marzban is co-founder of Shekra Crowd Fund for Start-ups , visiting professor for Islamic finance at Zayed University and an expert in computer-based financial services.

Prior to that, he worked with a number of start-ups, as Product Development Director and Head of Research for IdealRatings Inc., a San Francisco-based start-up focusing on socially responsible fund services.

He received his PhD specialising in sharia-compliant portfolio management from the University of Cologne in Germany and has published works in the areas of sharia-compliant crowdfunding, entrepreneurship and Islamic funds, which have appeared or were presented in numerous ranked international journals and events. He has been a visiting fellow at Durham University and is currently a visiting lecturer at various international universities, a technical committee member of the Finance Accreditation Agency in Malaysia as well as board member of the Egyptian Islamic Finance Association.

Nickolas NEIBAUER

 Nickolas Neibauer currently serves as the Regional Business Development Manager for INJAZ Al-Arab where he works in fundraising and grant stewardship across INJAZ’s 15 member nations from Morocco to Pakistan.

As part of his passion for coffee, he is one of the founders of Caffè Strada. In 2009, he moved to Amman, Jordan from Seattle to start a job at EcoHotels, where he worked between Amman and Feynan Ecolodge in Jordan’s Dana Biosphere Reserve.

He holds a master’s degree in economics from L'Università della Svizzera italiana in Lugano, Switzerland and a bachelor’s degree from Franklin College Switzerland in business and Italian.

 

Flavia PALANZA

 Flavia Palanza, who holds a master’s degree in economics, joined the bank in 1984 as an economist and senior economist for West Africa and subsequently the Caribbean, in the Projects Directorate.

In 1996, she was appointed member of a small team responsible for establishing and launching the bank’s evaluation unit. She remained there until 1999, when she became Deputy Head of Coordination in the Projects Directorate. 

In 2001 she moved to the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Department as Head of the Policy and Portfolio Management Division and, in 2007, as Associate Director for East and Central Africa and the Pacific. In November 2012, Mrs Palanza was appointed Director of the FEMIP Department.

Prior to joining the EIB, she had worked in the Asian Department of the International Monetary Fund.

Yousef  QARYOUTI

Director, ILO subregional office for North Africa

 

 

 
Yousef Qaryouti is the Director of the ILO subregional office for North Africa with a multidisciplinary academic and professional background of more than 25 years of international work.

His main areas of interest are labour, development, job creation and poverty alleviation. He obtained his BA and MA in psychology and sociology from the University of Jordan and his PhD in administration of rehabilitation and political sociology from Michigan State University - USA.

He started his professional career as a university professor in several Arab universities before he commenced his long service as an international expert with the ILO.

He is author and co-author of many publications and articles.

 

 

Ridha SAIDI

Minister in charge of Economic and Social affairs, Tunisia

 

 
Ridha Saidi is Minister Delegate to the prime minister in charge of economic issues.

Holding an engineering degree from ENIT and a master’s degree in quality and productivity management, he spent most of his career in the fields of energy, quality and control of economic policy. He is chairman of the northwest power transfer base for the STEG Company and worked as a consulting engineer.

He is a member of the executive bureau of Ennahdha, in charge of studies and planning, and also a founding member of UGET (General Union of Tunisian Students), a former scout and a human rights activist.

He drafted an analytical study on National Economy:

Realities and Prospects in 2009 and he is the author of several articles on economic issues.

Ibrahim SEIF

Minister of Planning and International Cooperation and Minister of Tourism and Antiquities

 

 

 

 

 

Ibrahim Saif holds an MSc and a PhD in Economics from the University of London.

He is a resident scholar at the Carnegie Middle East Centre. He also served as consultant to the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the International Labour Organization.

 Mr Saif is a former director of the Centre for Strategic Studies at the University of Jordan and served as Secretary General of the Economic and Social Council in Jordan.

 

 

 

 

Madlen SERBAN

Director, European Foundation for Training (ETF)

 

 

 

 

Madlen Serban has been Director of the European Training Foundation since 1 July 2009.

Before joining the ETF, she was Director of the National Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training in Romania. She has spent most of her career working in the field of vocational education and training. She has a broad international experience from her work as an expert and evaluator for international organisations including UNESCO, USAID, the European Commission, OECD, the World Bank and the ETF.

She has a PhD in social partnership in education and training from the University of Bucharest. She represented the Romanian government on the ETF’s Governing Board from 1998-2007.

 

Abdelouahed SOUHAIL

Minister of Employment and Professional Training, Morocco

 

 

Abdelouahed Souhail was appointed as Minister of Employment and Vocational Training by King Mohammed VI in January 2012,

A university graduate of the Faculty of Law and Economics, he incorporated the Moroccan Foreign Trade Bank (BMCE) in November 1967.

As a member representing the banking community, he participated in the work programme of "the Monitoring Committee of the Development of the Private Sector", which gathers representatives from the public and private sectors and the World Bank.

After the privatisation of the Banque marocaine du commerce extérieur (BMCE) in 1995, he was given the leadership of the national network, where he developed marketing plans for clients, individuals and professionals.

In June 1996, he assumed the general direction of the operation.

On 9 February 1998, His Majesty King Hassan II appointed him as CEO of Credit Immobilier et Hotelier (CIH).

He is married and has two children.

 

Neyif STEYTIEH

President of the Jordan Business Development Centre

 

 

Neyif Stetieh is the founder of the Business Development Centre (BDC), one of the first regional business development centres in the Middle East dedicated to youth and entrepreneurial development.

Today BDC is the region’s premier contributor to local economic development and business development managing a portfolio of donor-funded projects that contributes to youth employability, entrepreneurship, women’s empowerment and MSME development.

These projects have addressed the issue of unemployment by improving the country’s labour supply as well as contributing to its economic growth.

BDC is recognised as an example of good practice in employability and sustainable entrepreneurship development by OECD and UFM. 

Some of BDC’s partners are ITC, World Bank, ILO, CIDA, USAID, and UKAID amongst others. Furthermore, BDC has been recognised as an observer with UNCTAD.

Mohamed Fitouri SUALIM

Minister of Labour and Retraining, Libya

 

 

 

Mohamed Fitouri Sualim is the Minister of Labour and Retraining of Libya. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Tripoli University (1987).

Prior to his post, he worked with the General Authority of Manufacturing as well as with some other service-providing companies.

He worked for some years in the private sector.

 

 

 

 

Habib Ben YAHIA

Secretary General of the Arab Maghreb Union

 

 

 
 

Habib Ben Yahia is a Tunisian politician . From 1991 he served his first term as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tunisia until January 1997, when he became Minister of Defence. He served in that position until he became Minister of Foreign Affairs for the second time in November 1999.

In January 2006 he was appointed Secretary General of the Arab Maghreb Union.
